Essential Tips for Effective Lawn Care Maintenance

There’s something particularly satisfying about a freshly cut, healthy green lawn. It can completely transform the appearance of a garden and provide the perfect backdrop for everything else growing around it.

But keeping a lawn looking its best takes a little more than simply getting the mower out every few weeks.

From knowing when to mow to dealing with weeds and changing your routine with the seasons, good lawn care is all about consistency. Here are some of our essential tips for keeping your lawn healthy and looking great throughout the year.

Don’t Cut It Too Short

It can be tempting to cut your lawn as short as possible so you don’t have to mow it again quite so soon. Unfortunately, shorter doesn’t necessarily mean better.

Cutting too much grass off in one go can put the lawn under unnecessary stress. A slightly longer lawn can also cope better during periods of hot and dry weather.

During the main growing season, regular cuts are generally much better than allowing the grass to become very long before cutting it extremely short.

Think little and often, rather than giving the lawn an occasional drastic haircut.

Keep Those Blades Sharp

Your lawn mower might be doing the hard work, but the condition of its blades can have a big impact on the finish.

A sharp mower blade cuts through grass cleanly. A blunt blade can tear at the grass, leaving the tips looking ragged and potentially affecting the overall appearance of the lawn.

If you’re maintaining your own garden, checking your mower and keeping it properly maintained is well worth the effort.

Give the Edges Some Attention

You’ve finished mowing, stood back to admire your work... and something still doesn’t quite look right.

Quite often, it’s the edges.

Neatly maintained edges around paths, patios and borders can make an enormous difference to how finished a lawn looks.

It's one of those relatively small details that can make the whole garden appear much more cared for.

Keep on Top of Weeds

A few weeds can quickly become considerably more if they're allowed to establish themselves.

Regularly checking your lawn gives you an opportunity to spot unwanted growth early and decide on the appropriate way to manage it.

The important thing is not to assume every lawn needs the same treatment. Different weeds and different lawn conditions can require different approaches.

Don’t Let Leaves Take Over

Autumn can be a beautiful time in the garden right up until you realise how many leaves one tree can actually produce!

Leaving a thick covering of fallen leaves sitting across the lawn for extended periods can prevent the grass underneath from getting the light it needs.

Regular leaf clearance throughout autumn keeps the garden looking tidier and stops everything becoming one enormous job at the end of the season.

Be Sensible With Water

British weather normally provides us with plenty of water, but prolonged dry spells are a different story.

During hot weather, lawns can become dry and turn brown. Established grass can often recover when wetter conditions return, so a brown lawn isn't necessarily a dead lawn.

If you do decide to water your lawn during dry weather, take account of the conditions and any local restrictions that may be in place.

It can also be sensible to leave the grass slightly longer during particularly hot periods rather than continuing to cut it very short.

Your Lawn Changes With the Seasons

One of the biggest mistakes with garden maintenance is treating every month exactly the same.

As temperatures rise in spring, grass growth starts to increase and mowing becomes more frequent. Summer brings its own challenges, particularly during hot and dry periods.

Autumn means falling leaves, slower growth and preparing the garden for the colder months ahead.

Winter is generally much quieter, with grass growth slowing considerably.

Working *with* the seasons rather than against them makes looking after a lawn much easier.

Consistency Is the Secret

You don't need to spend every waking hour working on your lawn to keep it looking good.

The real secret is simply keeping on top of it.

Regular mowing, tidy edges, sensible weed management and seasonal attention can make a huge difference.

It's the same principle we use when providing garden maintenance around Mansfield we'd much rather properly care for a garden regularly than simply turn up, cut the grass and leave.

Good garden maintenance should consider the whole outdoor space.
